モミジガーデン Momiji Gardens
モミジガーデンの位置する、パシフィック・ナショナル・エキスポ会場は、第二次世界大戦中に日系カナダ人が集められた拘留キャンプ跡地である。そこに、歴史の記憶を留めることも意図して日系カナダ人によりモミジガーデンが造られた。設計と施工にあたったのは、バンクーバー地域を中心として活動する日系カナダ人造園家が集まって組織された協会。このバンクーバー日系ガーデナーズ協会は、1960年，ブリテッィシュコロンビア大学植物園の新渡戸記念日本庭園完成を契機として誕生した。
庭園はエキスポ会場のヘイスティング公園の一角に位置し、公園と同じく常時公開。上下2段からなりその段差を利用した滝と下の池が主景となる。日本モミジや小さな潅木に囲まれ、敷地の中央に直径２０メートルの池が配置され、１５メートルの長さをもつ渓流がそこへ流れ込む。
Hastings Park, the site of the Pacific National Expo, was also the location of an internment camp where more than 8,000 Canadians of Japanese origin were held during World War II. Japanese-Canadians created Momiji Gardens at Hastings Park in order to memorialize this history. The garden was designed and constructed by the Vancouver Nikkei Gardeners’ Association, an association of Japanese-Canadian landscape architects who were active around the Vancouver area. (This group came into being with the construction of the Nitobe Memorial Garden at the University of British Columbia’s Botanical Garden in 1960.)
The garden is located in a corner of Hastings Park, where the Expo was held. Both the park and the garden are always open to the public. The principle elements are a waterfall, which utilizes the difference in grade in a two-step descent, and a pond; these are surrounded by Japanese maple trees and small shrubs. A mountain stream, 15 meters long, flows into the 20-meter-wide pond at the center of the site.
