オマーン平安日本庭園 Japanese Garden in Sultanate of Oman
元在オマーン日本国大使神長善次氏より、日本庭園作庭の依頼を綜合庭園研究室が受け、オマーン日本庭園設立実行委員会が発足し、計画は1999年7月に開始した。
敷地は平坦で大規模な公園ナシームガーデンの一区画であり、池をつくるために掘削した土を利用して、遠くに見えるオマーンの男性的な山を背景に５つの小山を築造。オマーン産の樹木はポット苗で小さく、竣工時の樹木のボリューム感を期待できなかったので、小山に芝生でみどりのマウンドをつくり、青々としたマウンドによって庭園の完成度を表現し、遠景のオマーンの山々と周囲にある緑の景色を庭園へ取り込む借景の庭園技法を取り入れた。5つの小山が存在することにより立体感と遠近感ができ、十分な広さのない庭園にボリューム感を創り出すことができた。
池、中ノ島、石橋、滝、流れ、州浜を配した回遊式の本格的な日本庭園である。
滝、流れに使用した石は計約350t、大きい石はひとつ18t。マスカットから約170㎞離れたところから輸送して設置した。灯籠、十三層塔は日本から運び、四阿は設計図を現地の大工に渡して作成してもらったものである。
12～2月を除き、日中は暑いので来訪者は少ないが、夕方に、涼しさを求めて人々が集まってくる場所である。そのため、夕方のライティングに工夫を凝らし、水のせせらぎの音を楽しみながら心にやすらぎを与えることのできる庭園をつくるよう心がけた。

When the Japanese ambassador to Oman, Kaminaga Zenji, received a request to look into the possibility of making a Japanese garden located in Oman, the Oman Japanese Garden Construction Committee was created. The committee began working on the plan for the garden in July of 1999. It is a traditional Japanese garden with a pond, an island, a stone bridge, a waterfall, a stream, and a pebble beach.
The garden is in the Naseem Garden Park, a large, flat park outside of Muscat City. The builders used the soil excavated from digging the pond to construct five small hills, placing them so that a large mountain could be seen in the distance behind them. The hills were then covered with grass to create fresh green mounds. “Borrowing” landscape – in this case, the mountain in the background – to make it part of the garden scenery is a traditional technique used in Japanese gardens. The five small mountains create the appearance of solidity and add perspective, while the distant mountain makes the small garden appear larger.
Because the trees were container-grown in Oman and planted as seedlings, it was difficult to determine how large they would eventually become. The stones used for the waterfall and stream weigh a total of 350 tons; each large stone weighs about 18 tons. The stones came from Muscat, 170 kilometers away. The garden lanterns and a thirteen-level pagoda were brought over from Japan, while a local carpenter built the arbor. Except in winter months, it is very hot in the daytime, so few people visit the garden then; rather, they gather there in the cool of the evening. The ingeniously designed lighting is therefore an important part of the garden. In addition, the sound of flowing water gives visitors a sense of peace, adding to their enjoyment of the spot.
